One of the things I've learned in my first year of beekeeping is that if you ask 10 beekeepers a question you'll get 14 answers. Everyone has an opinion and…

I knew that yesterday would be swarm day. The weat I knew that yesterday would be swarm day. The weather has been cold here in Georgia and yesterday it was supposed to be in the mid-70’s.

I lost two swarms for sure, maybe three in my own apiary and had already done two splits. The first one was high and by the time I got the ladder set up I watched them leave. A swarm in motion is awe-inspiring.

The second one left while I was getting in the hives to inspect and split. I followed them though the pasture and lost them over the fence into the neighbor’s property. The third one was caught on the game cam.

The good thing is while searching for the swarms, and where they might’ve (hopefully) doubled back onto one of my trees, I saw my first Eastern Screech Owl, which is now living in a box I installed for that purpose.

All was not lost in the swarm department! A friend called from the City, and said there was a swarm at City Hall! I raced home and was able to contact a new beekeeper who I’m going to help with his bees this year. As a result he learned to catch a swarm and and he got free bees!

A long, exhausting day, but a good one!

Took the opportunity to do a quick check and drop some more sugar bricks on the hives. Girls all doing well after crazy low temps over Christmas. The quilt boxes were a big factor! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So this happened!!! Honorable mention medium extra So this happened!!! Honorable mention medium extracted honey. Third in light extracted. And FIRST PLACE in black jar. The first two categories are about presentation as much as flavor. But black jar? That’s about the best tasting honey and that means my honey was the best tasting at the fair. Move outta my way Ma Ingalls! With ultra credit to my bees, and my hubby for researching and planting seeds for the pasture together to make the best tasting honey in Georgia, and I have the ribbon to prove it! Oh, and we’re a Georgia Grown farm too!

With so many splits and swarms not every hive could give honey and not starve. Part of being a beekeeper is the long game. If I take too much now they won’t make it through winter. Still, I’m really happy with what I got.
